Hannie van Genderen

Hannie van Genderen is a clinical psychologist/psychotherapist as well as a supervisor and trainer in individual and group Schema Therapy. Since 2000 she has also been the owner of Van Genderen Opleidingen. From 1987 to 2017, as a clinician, she was involved with scientific research into the treatment of a broad range of psychological disorders at the University of Maastricht. During this research she worked in close collaboration with Professor Arnoud Arntz and other researchers. From its very early beginnings, in 1996, she has been involved with the introduction of (schema-oriented) psychotherapy for personality disorders in the Netherlands as a student of J. Young, A. Beck and C. Padesky. In the past five years the Group Schema Therapy of Farrell Shaw has been added to this.
Hannie was one of the founders of the Dutch Schema Therapy Society and the ISST (the International Society of Schema Therapy) and has held leadership positions in both of those organisations.

Education

Hannie has been teaching cognitive behavioural therapy for more than 30 years, with a particular focus on the field of Schema Therapy over the past 20 years. In addition to her own Schema Therapy courses and workshops, she has 30 years’ experience in developing various educational programmes (such as psychotherapy, mental health psychology and clinical psychology programmes) and co-ordinating elements thereof at RINO Zuid. For many years she has been giving workshops and training sessions in several European countries outside of the Netherlands (including places such as Aarhus, Berlin, Freiburg, Geneva, Mainz, Oxford, Warsaw, and Zurich), as well as in New York and, most recently, in Moscow.

Publications, congress papers and presentations

After first having contributed to a large number of chapters in various practical guides in the field of Schema Therapy, she published her first book in 2005 with professor A. Arntz: ‘Schema Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder’. This book has been translated into seven languages. In 2012 her second book was published: Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns: A Schema Therapy Self-Help and Support Book (co-authored with G. Jacob and L. Seebauer). This book is currently available in five languages. She has also given a large number of workshops and masterclasses at national and international congresses.
